Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated SEN Education Mentor to join our team at an alternative provision in Wokingham. This provision caters to children and young people aged 5-19 with a variety of additional needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The role involves providing high-quality, person-centered support that promotes the physical, emotional, and educational development of children with complex needs. You will play a vital role in supporting our students in their learning, both in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, helping them achieve their potential in a safe and nurturing environment. We pride ourselves on delivering therapeutic interventions and holistic care that focuses on the individual needs of each student. Key Responsibilities: Work with children and young people aged 5-19 with various additional needs, including PMLD, SEND, ASD, and associated behavioral challenges. Provide personal care and support for students with PMLD, including feeding, toileting. Assist with the preparation and delivery of engaging and differentiated learning activities, ensuring they are accessible to all students. Work 1:1 or in small groups to deliver interventions, therapies, and learning activities as outlined in the student’s EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan). Foster a safe, supportive, and structured environment where all students feel valued and supported. Help students develop communication, social, and life skills using strategies and tools such as Makaton, PECS, or other assistive technology (training provided if necessary). Provide emotional and behavioral support to students, implementing agreed behavior management strategies. Collaborate closely with teachers, SENCO, therapists, and external agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes for students. Attend and contribute to meetings regarding student progress and welfare, keeping accurate records and monitoring their individual development. Act as a positive role model and develop strong, trusting relationships with students and their families. Essential Requirements: Experience working with children or young people with additional needs, particularly PMLD, SEND, and ASD. Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting children with challenging behavior or complex needs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, staff, and parents/carers. Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to undertake training in specialist areas (e.g., behavior management, communication strategies, personal care). Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Desirable Skills and Qualifications: Previous experience in a similar SEN support role, particularly in an alternative provision or specialist school setting. Relevant qualifications such as CACHE Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent. Experience with Makaton, PECS, or other alternative communication methods. A solid understanding of EHCPs and how they guide the learning and support of students with additional needs. Why Join Us?
