Job Description
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill multiple vacancies of Data Engineers (APS5) and Senior Data Engineers (APS6) in the Data Integration Services Branch (DISB) to work in the Economic Data Integration Team (EDIT) and Data Integration Assembly (DIA). Successful applicants can work either full-time or part-time hours from one of our offices located in either Adelaide, Belconnen, Docklands, Perth or Sydney, although a hybrid model of working from home and the office applies. The key duties of the position include: About the roles Responsibilities are varied depending on the individual’s skills, their role and the requirements of their team. All team members are in data operations roles with responsibilities to build and innovate data pipelines, quality stage gates and maintain documentation against agreed specifications. Data Engineer (APS5) primary responsibilities may include: Wrangling large datasets using a range of tools such as Python, R, SAS and SQL to produce linkage inputs, data products, or insights. Linking datasets through merging or the application of statistical linkage methods. Extracting, cleaning and editing microdata and metadata. Transforming data into a more valuable format by customising, classifying, and coding data. Aggregating data and deriving new data items. Assembling datasets to create analytical data products. Undertaking quality assurance of source datasets, linkage results and assembled products. Delivering high quality, fit-for-purpose and timely outputs that meet clients’ needs. Working on a range of dynamic projects concurrently. Responding to user queries on data access and use to an agreed service level. Working within the team to contribute to the maintenance and continual improvement of user documentation and standard processes in line with data security requirements. Senior Data Engineer (APS6) primary responsibilities may include the responsibilities listed above, with a focus on: Providing leadership and support to Data Engineers, including developing their data capability. Managing data projects with competing priorities. What we are looking for (selection criteria) Data Engineers at the APS5 level typically have some previous professional experience working on moderately complex data projects under limited direction. These data engineers organise their workflow, make independent decisions and provide advice within their area of responsibility and specialisation. Senior Data Engineers at the APS6 level typically have considerable previous professional experience working on complex data projects under limited direction, with reasonable accountability and autonomy. These data engineers exercise considerable initiative and judgement and are relied upon to provide advice in relation to complex problems and support and contribute to innovation within the team. These roles involve additional people and project management responsibilities, including developing data capability. To be suitable for all roles you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience: Two or more years’ experience working with data and using a statistical programming language such as Python, R, SAS, and SQL (essential). Conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to critically assess and wrangle complex information and data, while developing innovative solutions (essential). Project support and/or management skills and the ability to deliver quality outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment. Oral, written and presentation communication skills including the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders, and operate effectively in a team. A commitment to supporting public trust in the government’s responsible use of data, including an awareness of, or ability to quickly understand and apply, data ethics and privacy principles, the ABS legislative framework and ABS data release policies. In addition to the above, to be suitable for at the APS6 level, you should also have: Leadership skills and staff management capabilities, including demonstrated experience leading a team and proactively managing competing priorities (essential). The following is desirable for all roles: Knowledge, or applied experience, in agile scrum methodology, project management applications such as Jira or Azure DevOps Knowledge, or applied experience in cloud-based computing and architecture. Academic qualifications in data engineering, data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or other fields with a strong quantitative component Eligibility To be eligible for these roles you: You must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply. You may need to obtain (or hold) and maintain at least a Baseline security clearance. ABS employees who have access to market sensitive information are restricted in market trading activities.
