People, Culture, and Training Manager Harry Hartog, Australia’s leading Independent Bookseller, is looking for our next Team Culture Training and Recruitment Manager. About Us Harry Hartog Independent Booksellers is proudly family-owned with six generations of bookselling experience. Today, the group has 20 physical stores, a growing online store and committed to our continued growth over the next 5 years. We infuse each store with its own distinct personality with an aim to enchant our customers with the experience of stepping into a world of adventure through books. No Harry Hartog Bookshop is the same as the others and our philosophy is that each person visiting our stores arrive as a customer, leave as a friend and return as family. About You With over 200 staff across the entire group, you will have had experience working in high-volume retail or hospitality. You are either currently working in a similar role already or are looking for the next step in your career. Highly professional, you are intentional, authentic and by nature curious about people. An active listener, you connect easily with people from all walks of life. You can build a cohesive team for each store with the skills and knowledge that represent the full spectrum of books we have on offer and the communities we serve. Once you have an understanding of our values, you are then able to work independently to create strategies that support them. Qualifications and Skills Experience : At least five years in a similar role within retail or hospitality, with a strong focus on building teams that help achieve sales and commercial outcomes HR Knowledge : Expertise in recruitment, performance management, and policy implementation. Working knowledge of IR regulations Leadership : Strong decision-making and negotiation skills Communication : Exceptional interpersonal skills to inspire teams to achieve company objectives Organisational Skills : Ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently Cultural Awareness : Passion for books and storytelling, with an understanding of the connection between aligning team culture with business success Key Responsibilities Human Resources and Employee Lifecycle Oversee onboarding processes to ensure new employees are set up to succeed in their roles Manage HR systems, including performance reviews and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards Sales and Commercial Success Collaborate with shop managers to implement sales-focused training programs to empower staff and develop their skills Monitor the impact of team culture initiatives on sales performance and customer loyalty, making data-driven adjustments as needed. Team Culture and Leadership Foster a workplace culture rooted in collaboration, inclusivity, and storytelling, where team members collectively represent the full range of categories sold at Harry Hartog. Build team morale by promoting belonging, job satisfaction, and shared accountability for the group’s success. Recruitment and Talent Acquisition Identify knowledge and interest gaps in store teams to represent the full breadth of genres we stock and recruit accordingly Leverage all digital resources to create recruitment campaigns that attract top talent who represent the Harry Hartog values Training and Development Develop recruitment and training strategies that will contribute to company growth Develop mentorship programs to foster leadership and align employees’ personal growth with business goals. Strategic Leadership and Brand Growth Collaborate with senior management to align HR strategies with company objectives and long-term business growth.
