Job Description

Who we are The Natural Resources Branch provides scientific and economic research, analysis and statistics that inform policy development for, and management of Australia’s domestic fisheries, Australia’s engagement in international fisheries, and Australia’s forests, water markets and agricultural land. The branch capability includes geospatial analysis, scientific sustainability assessments for fisheries and forests, and economic assessment and forecasting. The branch produces a range of outputs including regular publications and datasets, research and technical reports, representation and engagement in meetings and direct advice to policy makers. The Land and Water Economics program brings together expertise in economics and modelling to develop innovative approaches for estimating the consequences of climate change and water policies. The program provides economic analysis and strategic policy advice to government and industry decision makers, helping to address some of Australia's most critical policy challenges. The key duties of the position include: The Job We’re hiring an economist to help provide crucial evidence for climate change and water policy decisions. You’ll play a key part in addressing some of Australia's most urgent policy challenges, including the transition to net zero emissions and the management of environmental water in the Murray–Darling Basin. This is an opportunity to contribute to ambitious and impactful research projects and develop your skills within a collaborative and supportive team, where ideas matter more than job titles. We're looking for someone who shares our enthusiasm for economics and improving public policy. Our ideal applicant has a strong grasp of fundamental economic principles and the ability to apply their knowledge to generate policy advice that makes a positive difference. Your duties will include: • producing high-quality economic research and analysis for policy decision makers • collaborating with a team of economists and modellers to build innovative models for estimating the consequences of climate change and water policies • communicating complex research, including non-technical summaries, for decision makers • engaging with stakeholders across government and industry to share research findings and provide strategic policy advice. Please note that this recruitment process will initially be used to fill one vacancy and that the role may be able to be performed from any of the locations listed above . The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future vacancies in the division where the duties are of a similar nature. Eligibility What we are looking for Knowledge and experience The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate: • knowledge of economics and policy analysis and the ability to apply this knowledge to interpreting and advising on real-world problems • experience in applied economics and/or economic modelling • a history of successfully contributing to project delivery. Mandatory qualifications Tertiary qualifications in economics or other relevant disciplines. Notes On 13 March 2025 the salary range for this position will increase to $95,438 - $108,360.
