Job DescriptionThe Audience Growth team is focused on expanding and deepening connections with our audience across Australia and beyond. We use data-driven insights to identify trends, optimize content distribution, and tailor our journalism to meet diverse audience needs. By collaborating with editorial, data, and product teams, we ensure content not only reaches a wide audience but also resonates with them personally. Through innovation and adaptation, we maintain the trusted reputation of brands like The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Brisbane Times. Our Audience Engagement function, including our newsletter offering, is central to strengthening these connections with our audience. The Morning Edition Newsletter Editor is responsible for writing and producing the Monday to Friday Sydney Morning Herald and Age Morning Edition newsletters, which are sent to a combined audience of more than 170,000, delivering a comprehensive, concise and highly readable summary of the day’s news, feature stories and opinion pieces. This role sits within the Audience Engagement team, and reports to the Newsletter Editor. In this role you will collaborate with the Newsletter Editor to enhance the Morning Edition and provide feedback on any unmet needs or areas for improvement. The role involves evening work with flexible hours either remotely or in office. In this role you will: Curate the Morning Edition Newsletter for both The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age to select the stories of the day that represent news value, reader interest and the mastheads’ values. Write the newsletter introductions and sharp summaries of the day's top stories ensuring they are insightful, engaging and package up related content. Keep across print editions, online homepages, internal runsheets and evening newsletters to inform editing decisions. Keep in touch with breaking news and our competitors’ coverage to judge the news agenda of the day. Track and analyse audience data for the Morning Edition. Give the Morning Edition a voice. Ensure the newsletters display the breadth of our coverage and showcase our brand authority. QualificationsWhat we would like to see: Extensive journalistic experience in a daily newsroom. Clear, concise writing style. Impeccable news judgement. Ability to work independently with a high degree of autonomy. Thorough understanding of, and confidence to make decisions relating to, defamation law, contempt of court and other legal considerations. Excellent proof-reading skills. Strong interest in, and understanding of local, national and international current affairs. Proficiency in digital news production. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
