$83,706 - $89,659 up to 15.4% Superannuation DSTG/00342/25 The Role Security Operations Directorate has several vacancies for APS 5 Security Advisors. APS 5 Security Advisors are expected to contribute to the development of consistent security processes for DSTG both within the operations of the Research Security Service Desk and within DSTG’s divisions. APS 5 Security Advisors are accountable for the accurate delivery of security services within identified timeframes, sharing their own expertise with others, and guiding and mentoring less experienced employees to positive security outcomes. APS 5 Security Advisors are required to assist, undertake and deliver complex personnel and protective security services to support Divisional staff. Additionally, they assist in monitoring Divisional security performance to ensure an appropriate level of security and compliance is maintained. Advisors will proactively work to promote a positive security culture within a research or highly technical environment through professional support and advice, enhancing Defence research through innovative security solutions. The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: Handling complex security queries that require judgment and interpretation of Defence and whole of government security policy. Collaborating with Senior Security Advisors, Security Officers and Divisions to address security vulnerabilities and improve overall security measures in line with the Defence Security Principles Framework (DSPF). Providing expert advice on, and constructing, security risk assessments (SRAs) and mitigation strategies for classified research activities, facilities and events within DSTG. Responding to security incidents by assessing situations in line with DSPF intent and taking the initiative to implement responses to ensure research security integrity. Liaising with external security partners at peer level (DoSA and AGSVA etc.) to ensure strong working relationships. About our Team Research Technology and Operations Division (RTO) delivers specialist capabilities to Defence Innovation Science and Technology (IS&T). RTO comprises a professional workforce of engineers, technicians, computational scientists and other staff who provide a wide range of highly specialised and unique research capability and innovative solutions delivering advanced research platforms for defence, national security and the wider IS&T ecosystem. RTO capabilities accelerate and protect Defence's science and technology advances and promote a collaborative, compliant, safe and healthy workplace. Research Operations Branch is building a strong and professional workforce of highly qualified, trusted advisors who work with our research scientists in the provision of leading edge, safe and secure research infrastructure and business advice. We engage with broader Defence stakeholders to ensure DSTG’s, IS&T enabling capability requirements are well planned and appropriately prioritised with a strategic mindset. Research Operations also has stewardship of the delivery of DSTG’s Trials planning, coordination and support. Our Ideal Candidate We are looking for professionals with strong experience in security risk management and analysis, with an understanding of Australia’s strategic, Defence and national security priorities. Ideal candidates will: Have experience or the ability to acquire rapidly an understanding of Australian Government and Defence security principles, policies and controls and the role these play in mitigating high-level security risks. Be adept at interpreting policy, developing and delivering solutions to security challenges, and advising on critical security issues. Demonstrate communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to convey policy advice with a high level of accuracy. Be comfortable with proactively building and maintaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Confidently utilise critical thinking to produce best outcomes for the work area, DSTG and Defence. Actively maintain and seek up-to-date knowledge on Security threats, risk and policy changes. You may be required to travel interstate occasionally. Security Clearance: Prior to commencement successful applicants will be required to obtain a Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) security clearance. A higher level of security clearance may be required as you progress into more complex work in this role, such as Deputy Communication Intelligence Security Officer (DCOMSO) ratification.
