Job Description

Who You Are You are a qualified legal professional, such as an admitted Solicitor of England and Wales, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, with over three years of post-admission or post-call experience. You possess a solid understanding of local government law, public procurement, and contract law, including construction law matters, JCT building contracts, and contracts for goods and services. With at least two years of direct experience in public procurement and contract management, you have demonstrated success in managing caseloads, building stakeholder relationships, and working within a performance management framework. You demonstrate a proactive approach to problem-solving, adaptability to changing demands, and possess excellent communication skills. You are committed to continuous professional development and can maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive information. You align with the Council's commitment to equal opportunities and can present reports and statements to various audiences confidently. What the Job Involves As a Contracts Lawyer for Southwark Council's Legal Services, Planning and Development division, you will provide high-quality, cost-effective legal advice to various Council bodies including the Cabinet and Committees. Your responsibilities will include delivering sustainable legal services, advising on legal matters related to contracts and public procurement, drafting legal documents, and attending departmental working groups and contract review boards. You will interpret new legislation, prepare and present cases, and ensure compliance with statutory frameworks and Council obligations. Additionally, you will support the development and delivery of council strategies and policies, maintain detailed records, manage a complex caseload, and promote good governance within your work. This role involves hybrid working with at least one day per week at the Tooley Street office, London Bridge, with potential for extension beyond the initial three-month contract. Your role will be regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, requiring compliance with its code of conduct and principles.
