Job Advert: SEN Teaching Assistant with BSL training
Location: Wandsworth, London
Contract Type: Full-time, Long term

We are currently recruiting for a well-established Special Educational Needs (SEN) school located in Wandsworth, dedicated to providing high-quality, inclusive education to children with a range of complex needs, including hearing impairments. The Schools’ passionate team works collaboratively to create an environment that promotes independence, confidence, and success for all students.
The School are currently seeking a compassionate and skilled SEN Teaching Assistant with BSL (British Sign Language) Level 2 or above qualification to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, supporting those with hearing impairments to achieve their full potential. You will be working 1:1 and in small groups with students aged 5-16.
This is a full-time, long term role with a view to going permanent. The hours are from 8.30am-4pm, Monday to Friday. The daily rate of pay is between £(Apply online only) a day depending on skills and experience.
As an SEN Teaching Assistant with BSL, you will provide crucial support to students who are hearing impaired, assisting them in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in school life. You will work closely with Teachers, and other Teaching Assistants, utilising your British Sign Language (BSL) to ensure effective communication and understanding.
Key Responsibilities:
Support students with hearing impairments in both individual and group settings, ensuring full access to lessons and activities.
Use BSL (British Sign Language) to facilitate communication and enhance the learning experience students.
Assist with the preparation and modification of learning resources to meet the needs of students.
Provide emotional and behavioural support, promoting inclusion and building students’ self-esteem.
Help with personal care and mobility where necessary, following school policies and safeguarding protocols.
Foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students, ensuring their well-being at all times.
Requirements for this role:
BSL Level 2 or above qualification is essential.
Experience supporting children or young people with hearing impairments is highly desirable.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with a commitment to using BSL to support learning.
A compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach, with a genuine desire to help students thrive.
Knowledge and understanding of special educational needs and disability (SEND).
Experience in an educational setting, particularly within an SEN environment, is an advantage but not essential.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and adapt to the evolving needs of the students.
A positive, proactive attitude and a strong commitment to inclusion and diversity.
