Mechanical Design Engineer
Our client is a privately owned specialist consultant based near Sheffield which has developed an enviable reputation in supporting its clients to deliver bespoke service offerings and solutions, including holistic design support and analysis, reverse engineering, product and manufacturing R&D and technical project management, amongst others. Sectors / applications cover civil / structural / mechanical engineering, aerospace, rail, defence and nuclear to name but a few.

Our client has experienced a period of significant growth, and indeed is set on an envious upwards trajectory over the next 5-10 years, and consequently wishes to appoint a high calibre Mechanical Design Engineer. The roles report to the Design Manager, and you will be joining a diverse, innovative and creative team working in a challenging and fast paced environment. Our client is proud of the fact that all of their services are offered as a conjoined or singular approach in-house as part of multi-disciplinary engineering team. As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for supporting the successful delivery of innovative, creative and winning design packages in line with client key drivers, and project programs and budgets.
The Role
* This role involves a broad range of detailed design accountabilities covering the abovementioned disciplines and industry sectors
* Take concept designs to produce a fully detailed design package and working design documents for multiple projects
* Conduct initial project conceptual work and surveys, attend meetings and offer input into project submissions and presentations
* You will be responsible for junior engineers of varying levels including allocation of work, and reviewing and checking of their work, along with ensuring all projects are delivered on time and to program
* Awareness of cost implications within designs
* Assist with effectively dealing with design issues / risks and minimising their impact
* Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation
* Liaising with external designers, clients and in-house teams
* Compliance with relevant industry standards, requirements and in-house processes
* Ability to analyse and produce designs in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection and detailed drawings
The Person
* The successful candidate will ideally be qualified at a tertiary level or (HNC / HND) in a relevant discipline or possess a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a similar role
* The ability to deliver real working solutions which balance the requirements of functionality, design integrity, manufacturability (design for manufacture), serviceability and costs.
* A working knowledge of end-to-end solutions including evolution of concepts through the various stages to final delivery.
* Ability to create and understand technical drawings and documentation to satisfy customer requirements within a ISO9001 framework.
* Proficiency in at least one CAD Design package such as CATIA, Solidworks, Inventor or Fusion
* A strong focus on building and maintaining client and supplier relationships.
* Strong organisational skills to manage spend profiles and timescales to support project goals in a dynamic environment.
* Experience in delivering on company projects often to challenging timescales
* Experience of being an effective communicator, who is confident and focused, with the ability to manage your time and duties in a professional and effective manner
* Apprentice trained or demonstration of some hands-on experience in engineering activities.
* Microsoft Office user, in particular Word & Excel.
* Working knowledge of industry standards such as Eurocodes.
* An understanding of load paths and structures, with a view to performing basic hand calculations and a basic understanding of FEM.
