Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed 22 months in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,250 - $10,000/Mon.

DUTIES:

Provides end-to-end support for various web-enabled tools and services that provide data and data products to end users. This includes appropriate system administration of Linux-based servers and necessary software, web-based scripting and programming, and web site design, implementation and maintenance. Leads all aspects of development, testing, and deployment of web-based interactive products, including design and coding of User Interface (UI), charts, maps, interactives, and dashboards for ocean, climate, and coastal hazards data

. Acts as point of contact with external groups, including end-clients and funding agencies for the web-enabled projects. Ensures developed tools, products, and visualizations are responsive to user needs, compliant with Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS)-designated standards and best practices, and integrate seamlessly with existing data systems, specifically those at the Asia-Pacific Data Research Center (APDRC) and the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS).

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and an additional four (4) years of relevant web page development experience may substitute for a Bachelors Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Five to seven (5-7) years of web-based product development or web page development, or programming experience, specifically handling Earth and environmental data. Experience includes at least two (2) years of documented experience with designing and developing integrated web-based services that link data to applications, using for example Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) services (e.g., Web Coverage Service (WCS), Web Map Server (WMS),

Web Feature Service

(WFS)) or OPeNDAP. Also includes at least two (2) years of experience with UNIX-based system administration (e.g., shell scripting), and five (5) years experience with a high-level language (e.g., Python, R, etc.).

KNOWLEDGE

Proficient in use of web programming with raw markup language (e.g., HTML, javascript). Basic knowledge of operational oceanographic or atmospheric forecasting and data. Knowledge of machine-level administration including web hosting and network security.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Ability to design and create a web site based on user specifications that includes interactive graphics and the display of ocean/atmospheric data. Ability to learn additional programming languages as needed. In addition, ability to write scripts to interface between databases and web-based tools (e.g., XML, XSLT, etc.). Ability to communicate well, particularly across disciplinary boundaries. Ability to develop technical documentation to guide future product development projects. Ability to translate consumer stories and needs into durable and impactful web-based products.

Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
