The base salary range for a Director-Competitive Intelligence & Analysis role is $104,700.00 to $193,700.00. Actual salaries will vary by geographic location and are based on factors such as candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, competencies, and company equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.

Director, Competitive Intelligence & Analysis Overview

Ensures leaders remain consistently appraised of current environmental, industry, and competitive actions and trends which have the potential to impact the organization's ability to sustain its competitiveness, and to pursue its strategic growth objectives. The Director will direct all company market research and industry benchmarking efforts, liaise with internal and external industry specialists, and provide insightful analysis of relevant issues to leaders. The position requires strong working knowledge of healthcare and employee benefits programs and products, excellent communication, and relationship management skills.

Essential Duties

  • Directs all company market research and industry benchmarking efforts demonstrating exceptional business knowledge across all areas of the company
  • Liaison with internal and external industry specialists to source, dissect, and distill relevant data and trends regarding competitor products and service capabilities, financial performance, and market positions versus the business and its partners. Provides insightful analysis of relevant issues to leaders, accompanied by recommendations to consider for possible strategic action
  • Applies broad industry knowledge and deep business acumen to inform department leads of competitor capabilities, positions, and trends to advise on internal projects and strategic objectives, leveraging deep knowledge of our products and services to identify and quantify competitive risks or advantages
  • Contracts and consults with experts at multiple industry benchmarking entities (e.g.: LIMRA, Eastbridge, Milliman, Smith Group, etc.), to direct our participation in over 65 benchmarking studies per year including, sourcing, synthesizing, and highlighting relevant market intelligence and competitive threats to inform business units about competitor financials and products, as well as overall industry trends
  • Plans, develops, and executes custom research projects for company leaders across a broad range of topics such as vendor identification and selection, book of business financials, market size and share and penetration studies to facilitate strategic scorecard initiatives and projects, delivering insightful read-outs to senior leaders on the research findings and implications for our business
  • Compiles, dissects, evaluates, and assesses industry studies and news items to identify and highlight relevant competitive intelligence issues of import, developing collected research into succinct executive summaries of salient details for business leaders with an emphasis on potential impacts to our business and with actionable recommendations for proactive solutions
  • Advises and supports business across the organization on industry trends and competitive positions to inform strategic departmental projects
  • Designs and conducts target-specific financial and market share research to inform leadership, supporting scorecard and other strategic priorities for business development objectives
  • Oversees data collection, filtering, vetting and correction, sorting, and combining of appropriate data elements as differently specified by each independent study
  • Collaborates with multiple business areas to manage deadline adherence and data verification prior to study submission
  • Leads the study completion, tracking and evaluation process using broad industry expertise and deep familiarity with business practices to analyze and summarize relevant implications to the business from the final study reports
  • Develops, implements, and maintains strategic tools to capture and share relevant competitive information and artifacts for the organization including "KLUE," Competitive Intelligence Sharepoint site, INSight newsletter, COVID-19 updates, and a searchable library of news items for competitive trend analysis
  • Represents the business at formal and informal industry Competitive Intelligence Workgroup conferences, forums, and discussion panels to gather unpublished market intelligence of potential strategic value to the company
  • Lead the Legislative Action Sub-Committee of the Risk Management Committee, ensuring that we are tracking, mitigating, and capitalizing on legislative action and decisions impacting our products and markets
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of healthcare and employee benefits programs and products
  • Strong product knowledge
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Advanced level skills in MS Office Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Strong database and professional industry software programs skills
  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, and coaching skills
  • Ability to maintain currency knowledge of state insurance laws, rules, and regulations for multiple geographical locations
  • Ability to project a professional image in dealing with senior management and external contacts
  • Ability to build relationships, credibility, and trust
  • Ability to prioritize multiple, conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a professional approach to problem resolution

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years' experience with 3-5 years' management experience in health, dental, life, AD&D and/or disability insurance
  • Or, equivalent military experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • MBA or post graduate degree (preferably M.S. in Research Science or M.S. in Data Analytics)
  • 10+ years' experience in health, dental, life, and/or disability insurance with experience directing and managing multiple workstreams across a broad spectrum of resources within the organization
  • 1-2 years' experience leading managers or multiple teams
  • State life and health insurance licenses or ability to obtain within deadline
