Job Description

Who We Are:

The radiation effects laboratory provides shipping/receiving of radioactive material for the Institute, remote handles high level radioactive sources for government and private clients, irradiates materials for radiation effects research and provides training on radioactive materials & handling.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Eventually step into a supervisory roll to provide day to day management of the radiation effects laboratory.
  • Work on mechanical and electrical upgrades to very old facility including enhanced safety and security improvements.
  • Provide backup for remote source handling and device loading and unloading.
  • Provide over site and backup for radioactive material inventories, security documentation, safety assessments and maintenance logs.
  • Aid in the training and other support as needed.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Provide oversight and support for radiation effects laboratory staff.
  • Oversee shipping and receiving of all radioactive shipments into and out of the Institute.
  • Participate in the maintenance of required, rigorous documentation typical in the handling of radioactive material. This may include reporting to various federal and state regulators.
  • Serve as project manager for irradiation projects, including bid preparation, generation of planning and work instructions, aiding in the actual irradiation and finally generating the final report. Most of this work falls under 10CFR50 Appendix B QA/QC
  • Support high level source handling projects including maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities. Authoring and reviewing procedures. Assist review and preparation of nuclear regulatory guidance documents, as needed.
Requirements:
  • Requires a Bachelors, Masters or a PhD in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering degree.
  • 5 years: Project management, client interaction, price quote generation and producing technical reports.
  • 5 years: Work under a highly structured work environment including 18 point QA/QC programs such as NQA-1 or 10CFR part 50 appendix B, security programs like 10CFR part 37, and robust safety environments.
  • 5 years: Experience with radioactive materials handling and management. Experience with remote handling of radioactive materials a plus.
  • 5 years: Experience with radiation, shielding, and neutronics modeling codes a plus. Knowledge of nuclear fuels processing and management a plus.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
