Statement of Purpose: Medical Liaison is responsible for the performance of a combination of administrative and clinical tasks within the clinic setting. Provides patient care under the direct responsibility and supervision of a Medical Provider, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), or Physician Assistant (PA) depending on local state regulations. Works as part of the multidisciplinary team, to enhance patient's quality of life and wellbeing. This position works closely with the providers under the direction of the Clinical Manager. Essential Functions:


Clinical Duties: As established by local state Medical Assistant scope of practice.

1.Promotes and practices CAN's mission and values and follows its policies and procedures.2.Ensures confidentiality is maintained by entire team regarding patient/client information in accordance with HIPAA, professional and departmental standards.3.Greets and rooms patients into appropriate exam rooms.4.Performs patient triage including the assessment of vital signs and measurement of anthropometric measures, and reviews patient chart to ensure all necessary documentation is present, current, and complete to facilitate visit with the provider visits.5.Obtains Chief complaint, and pertinent information regarding patient visit as well as required patient history.6.Prepares chart to include all diagnostic documentation as needed for patient care.7.Prepares patients for physical examinations and/or procedures and assists the provider accordingly.8.Explains medical procedures to patients.

9.Communicates information obtained through telephone encounters to nurse, and medical provider for proper management.

10.Prepares and administers medications, including by intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections—including vaccinations/immunizations, as directed by a physician or other licensed provider (e.g., a nurse practitioner or physician assistant)

11.Conduct tests and procedures as directed, such as EKG's, urine dipsticks, glucometer, etc.

12.Assists provider with minor surgical procedures (wound care, suture, and staple removal, etc.)

13.Disinfects (wipes down) exam room surfaces and medical equipment, per policy.

14.Maintains temperature logs for all clinic refrigerators containing specimens and medications.

15.Monitors patient flow after check-in and collaborates with clinic team members to coordinate patient care and services.

16.Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.

17.Documents all patient information and results accurately in the patient's chart in a timely manner.

18.Prepares and distributes reports within the clinic and to the health care team as necessary.

19.Prepares records/documents in response to requests from other health care providers.

20.Requests diagnostic test results from outside laboratories and/or other health care providers.

21.Provides assistance with referrals and coordinates services with other organizations, federal and local programs.

22.Performs required medical procedures associated with research projects, and maintains complete and thorough documentation, as required by the principal investigator or designated staff.

23.Assists with referrals and coordinates services with other healthcare facilities, organizations, and federal and local programs and collaborates with clinic team members to coordinate patient services.

24.Maintains required equipment and supply logs (AED, Eye Wash, Vaccine Fridge, PPE, etc.)

25.Follows all health and safety protocols and procedures as part of Midland's infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, Stericycle, and Confidentiality policies.

26.Serves and protects the Organization by adhering to professional standards, institutional policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.

27.Participates and strives to achieve assigned Annual Performance Objectives as established by Midland leadership.

28.Continuously demonstrates clinical competency with medical assistant skills and safety procedures and utilizes universal precautions where appropriate.

29.Wear a name badge with credentials visible to patients.

30.Adheres to ethical and legal standards of practice.

31.Performs all other assigned duties.


Administrative Duties:

1.Assists with Patient Care Coordinators (PCC's) - Front desk, and Health Information Management (HIM) duties when required.

2.Performs administrative duties.

3.Works with general office / clinic equipment (copier, fax, telephone, scanners, etc.)

4.Collaborates with Partner agencies as needed.

5.Performs billing and coding of services.

Requirements:

Education/Professional:


Minimum Qualifications:

1.Highschool diploma or equivalent (GED)

2.Medical Assistant Certification issued by an accredited institution approved by the local state, or a minimum of 3 years' experience working in a health care setting.

3.Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) Certification

4.Electronic Medical Records training


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


Knowledge:

1.Knowledge of HIV and STI medical terminology, procedures, medications, and accepted treatment practices.

2.Knowledge of local, federal, department, and OSHA/Stericycle rules, regulations, and mandates.

3.Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, medications, and accepted treatment practices.

4.Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures.


Skills:

1.Skill in patient triage in person, on the phone, or via telehealth, and transmitting information to nursing / clinical team.

2.Skills in answering the telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.

3.Adept knowledge of venipuncture, phlebotomy, finger sticks, and specimen processing.

4.Skill in time management, problem solving, multitasking, and prioritizing care.

5.Skill in preparing/maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence.


Abilities:

1.Ability to work with minimal supervision.

2.Ability to communicate clearly in a professional manner.

3.Ability to maintain quality control and safety standards.

4.Ability to read and interpret lab orders requested by medical providers.

5.Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

6.Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques, be a self-starter, work effectively, be organized, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

7.Able to work with all members of the interdisciplinary team in a team environment.

8.Ability to participate in research projects under the supervision of the principal investigator, or designated staff.


CAN Required Trainings:

General Orientation HIPAA Sexual Harassment

Violence in the Workplace HIV/AIDS Health Stream Courses (as assigned)


Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, audio visual, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Requirements:

1.Neat, professional appearance.

2.Sedentary- Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly in lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

3.Requires expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, visual and auditory acuity.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This position requires hours of work time during normal operating hours.

Travel: Travel is primary during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have valid insurance and driver's license.
