Job Description

The Research and Development group at the Novara site supports many elements critical to the success of the Gowan Company. The group supports chemical development, formulation development, manufacturing and supply chain, regulatory sciences, quality assurance, intellectual property as well as new business initiatives. An Analytical Chemist will collaborate with group members to continue the tradition of scientific excellence in which timely, high-quality results allow the Gowan Company to make sound business decisions with the highest confidence. Duties and Responsibilities: Work safely at all times and follow all safety rules and requirements of the site, including waste disposal guidelines; Conduct analyses of raw materials, active ingredients, formulated products and lab development samples using on-site equipment; Coordinate the analyses of samples at external service providers; Interpret and communicate the results to group members and project team members, and produce reports, presentations, and other documentation; Develop new methods or modify existing methods to obtain accurate and useful results; Become the scientific expert for all active ingredient analytical methods and maintain an electronic library of in-force methods; Ensure that all analytical equipment, including those used by group members, are properly maintained in good working order; coordinate service and preventative maintenance visits with contractors; Maintain adequate parts and supplies for on-site instruments, and maintain a log of maintenance activities for each; Develop a detailed long-term capital plan to replace older analytical instruments with newer instruments consistent with the requirements and capabilities of the site; prepare specifications and obtain quotations needed for purchasing analytical equipment; Lead the technical transfer of analytical methods between Gowan and its external partner companies and institutions; Assist with troubleshooting for processes conducted at manufacturing sites; Audit the analytical capabilities of any potential external partner company, which could include a gage R&R study; Maintain a standards library to support analysis of made-for-Gowan active ingredients; Conduct quality verification analyses on commercial samples of active ingredients; Evaluate GLP analytical reports for correctness and completeness; Provide training to group members as needed; Prepare robust Standard Operating Procedures as required; Support establishment of trade secrets, patents, etc.; Work to support the relevant departments of Synthesis Chemistry, Process Development and Formulation Development. Support management of chemical inventory and chemical waste; Travel ( Other duties as assigned. Required Qualities: Executes daily work plans with careful attention to all safety aspects of each task; Applies knowledge, experience and creativity to solve analytical challenges; Reliably provides precise and accurate analysis results; Interacts and collaborates with group members and extended team members in a highly professional manner; Works collaboratively and respectfully with personnel located internationally; Ability to travel ( Monitors industry trends with respect to analytics and recommends ways to enhance capability and improve performance of analytical activities at the site; Maintains a relentlessly positive attitude. Required Qualifications: Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and at least 7 years of experience in a similar role. Substantial experience developing robust methods on standard industrial analytical instruments, including GC, GC/MS, HPLC and HPLC/MS. Substantial experience conducting analysis of organic chemicals using standard industrial analytical instruments. Demonstrated experience in the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of GCs, HPLCs and other standard industrial analytical instruments. Strong working knowledge of organic chemicals, agricultural chemicals and formulations. Experience with supplier quality management programs. Proficient in operation of personal computers using standard office and network software. Ability to work collaboratively in a science-based business. Maintain positive and effective communication across functional teams. English language is a requirement. J-18808-Ljbffr
