Position: Lyon Township Building Official


Reports to: Elected Officials – Township Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer


 


General Responsibilities:


 The Building Official is responsible for the adherence to and enforcement of current Michigan Building Codes. Under the supervision of the Township Supervisor, Treasurer, and Clerk, the Building Official:



  • Performs professional and administrative duties;

  • Assists the Township residents, commercial property owners, and developers with building issues, questions, and concerns;

  • Interprets and enforces the applicable building ordinances;

  • Assists employees engaged in planning, building and code enforcement services.


The Building Official position is a full-time position, with the expectation that this individual will lead the Building Department in continuing its excellent customer service.


Hours: Full Time


Benefits: As established by the Lyon Township Personnel Manual.

Salary Range:  $75,000 - $90,000 (Based on Experience) 


 


Essential Functions and Responsibilities, as Assigned


The Lyon Township Building Official enforces the current Michigan Building Codes. The Building Official must possess active Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer licenses issued and certified by the State of Michigan. The position requires extensive knowledge of residential and commercial construction processes and Michigan Building Codes. Demonstrated residential and commercial construction experience and knowledge, along with the ability to analyze, prioritize, effectively and efficiently problem solve and communicate are mandatory. 


 


The Building Official must provide direction and guidance for the development and continuous improvement of permitting and inspection processes. Demonstrated residential and commercial construction experience and knowledge, along with actively researching new technology and procedures to improve the Building Department processes, is required.


 


The Building Official must enforce State Codes and facilitate the resolution of construction and property-related issues. Knowledge of construction processes, the ability to effectively communicate both interdepartmentally and externally of the organization are a requirement.  Exceptional customer service skills and work ethic are mandatory. 


 


Represent the Building Department both internal and external to the organization and function as the State Building Codes and construction subject matter expert. Examples include, but not limited to:



  • Assist in Building Code enforcement litigation as required

  • Attend Administrative Meetings

  • Attend Township Board of Trustees meetings

  • Coordinate as needed with local, County and State authorities

  • Assist in preparing and monitoring yearly Building Department budgets

  • Address questions and concerns in the office and on the phone

  • Represent and attend meetings as requested/required


 


The Building Official provides overall direction for the Building Department Staff. The ability to prioritize, effectively communicate, and delegate is mandatory. An exemplary work ethic, integrity, and customer service skills are required for setting the overall tone and objectives for the department. Supervision and oversight of the contracted inspectors as it pertains to inspection services, approval of invoices provided, and overall public relations of the contracted inspectors is a must.

Certifications, Licenses (minimum requirements)



  • State of Michigan Building Official, Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer License

  • Current valid driver’s license

  • Personal vehicle insurance

  • Must maintain eligibility to drive


 


Education Formal Training and Experience



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, City Planning or related field and 5 years progressive experience in building construction, inspection and ordinance enforcement

  • or

  • High school Diploma / GED with 8 years progressive experience in building construction, inspections and ordinance enforcement
