About the role:

An exciting opportunity to join Box Hill Institute as one of our Student Wellbeing Officers. This position is part time .6 (3 days per week) and is based at our Nelson Campus in Box Hill.

The Student Wellbeing Officer provides a range of support, welfare, intervention services and programs to underpin the success of BHI Group students. The Student Wellbeing Officers also work closely and collaboratively to support stakeholders including teachers, managers, administrative staff, parents and other Student Life team members to improve student retention and success and ensure an excellent student experience.

The Student Wellbeing Officer is a member of the Student Life team in Student Experience. This position will respond initially and appropriately to students at risk of disengagement from education, which may be a result of study difficulties but also mental health, life, relationship, financial or welfare difficulties.

The Student Life Team works cooperatively with students and teachers to provide an engaging, positive and supportive learning community enabling high student retention and success, where the student voice is heard, and is reflected positively internally and to prospective students and clients. The Student Life Team is an important part of BHI’s student value chain providing leadership in the development and delivery of a holistic, outstanding, and distinctive student experience so that the students have a seamless and improved end-to-end student experience

Salary for this role is PACCT 5 $73,730.51 pro rata plus compulsory superannuation.

About You:

  • A relevant degree in Youth Work, Community Services, Social Work, Counselling, or equivalent
  • Eligibility for membership with relevant professional association (eg ACA, AASW) desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrated and considerable experience in working to provide counselling, welfare, youth work or similar professional or educational support roles to vulnerable student groups, including the ability to provide individual support and liaison on their behalf
  • Ability to provide timely and effective intervention in critical situations and to provide appropriate support and referral to students presenting with complex mental health and/or welfare concerns
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with legislative requirements and consult with senior Student Life staff as required. Capacity to deal confidently and courteously with people at all levels and from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to providing a high level of customer care in a student support role
  • High standard of verbal and written communication with the ability to prioritise tasks, organise information and maintain and manage student records and reporting to required legal standards
  • High level skills in problem solving including ability to anticipate potential problems and pre-empt actions. Liaise with stakeholders to analyse issues and propose workable and positive solutions, implement and review solution effectiveness
  • Polite, considerate, empathetic and diplomatic; Sees things from others’ points of view, confirms understanding, and is able to get the best outcome for the person and for the work area. Can clearly determine the positives and negatives of any given action and can use expertise to logically present accessible choices to staff and students
