As a Sr. Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for engineering development of small watercraft autonomy (sensors, state estimation and actuators/control) for a small company performing engineering support as part of a larger team.. You will be responsible for successful execution of current ongoing mechanical engineering work and for development of new concepts in this area for Sentiont and its clients.

The ideal candidate will have a solid grounding in fundamental engineering or physical science and have broad curiosity about new developments in precise navigation and timing (PNT). Previous work on developments to address performance degraded environments (without GPS) is a plus. The goal is to take a problem from the initial concept through R&D, engineering and delivery to the customer.

Sentiont is a consultancy specializing in machine learning applications for engineering. Our mission is to develop a safer and more efficient world through the automatization of dangerous tasks and through advances in human-computer collaboration for AI-capable tasks. Currently, we are working on machine learning research and applications of naval engineering with the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL (the Gulf Coast) and Auburn University in Auburn, AL, with an intent to expand collaboration with universities and other research institutions along the East Coast. Our business is headquartered in Falls Church, VA (the D.C. area).

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Performs a full lifecycle product development (design, develop, testing, prototypes, and implementation).
  • Studies test data and makes comparisons with similar designs.
  • Evaluates the final product's overall performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Alters and modifies designs to meet requirements and to eliminate malfunctions.
  • Estimates budget and scope of project.
  • Reviews project reports to ensure projects are on schedule and within budget.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science required; Masters degree in Engineering preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience.

Experience and Skills/ Abilities:

  • Strong documentation and writing skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Working experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
  • Familiarity with 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ProE or other).
  • Adequate knowledge of engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, ProMechanica or similar).
  • Mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (Matlab, Excel, LabView etc).
  • Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science etc.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, Google Workplace or related software.

Desired Skills/Abilities:
  • Data Analysis, Computer Interfacing, and Embedded System Design.
  • Proficient in Python, C/C++, Object Oriented Programming, Ubuntu
  • Ability to clearly and concisely present ideas, reports, and budgets in various forms to the company and its clients.
  • Experience with Machine Learning

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
  • Ability to traverse facilities.
Other Requirements:
  • Must have U.S. citizenship.

Estimated Compensation Range: [ $53 to $65 ] dollars per hour


Expected Hours per Week: 40 hours
