Laboratory Support Technician

​Main Purpose of the Job

To support the chemistry laboratories and aid the smooth running of lab operations. This role could suit someone who is looking to get into a laboratory role and potentially has experience of working in a warehouse environment and/or hospitality. The most important requirement is a 'can do' attitude

Role and Responsibilities

​

To support the chemistry laboratories and aid the smooth running of lab operations by...

• Performing regular checks of fumehood airflows, weighing balances and emergency eye wash showers.
• Replenishing stock of consumable items, solvents and dryice within the lab.
• Clearing away glassware
• Cleaning the floors, sinks and maintaining tidy bench areas.
• Updating maintenance logs.

Administrative duties such as…

• Organising waste collections with an external provider for general waste and specialist waste.
• Ordering and maintaining a stock of lab coats.
• Managing our inventory system (using SAP) including booking in new materials, booking out used materials and performing stock checks.
• Reviewing invoices for payment (using Mfiles)

Line management duties…

• Management & supervision of junior laboratory technician staff.
• Setting work priorities and monitoring performance

Essential Requirements

• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Self-motivated, well organised and pro-active learner
• Flexible and reliable
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• A good understanding of laboratory housekeeping and safety practices
• Organised with ability to plan your own work
• Computer literate with Microsoft operating systems and software such as Word, Excel and Outlook
• Proactive with problem solving skills
• Ability to prioritise tasks and adapt to changing situations

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of SAP software
• Knowledge of Mfiles software
• Experience in management of a junior team member
• Experience of working in a chemistry lab environment
