Job Description
Morson Talent are working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector who have a current requirement for experienced Welding Superintendents (x2) to join their client's established site-based team in Somerset. These are (renewable) contract positions – inside IR35.
Joint Design Office
- The Joint Design Office (JDO) has been created to reinforce site-based engineering to quickly respond to engineering queries/problems coming from site construction to deliver the schedule and to deliver an increased scope of work. By being located close to the construction works the JDO team are able to quickly react and provide technical solutions/answers – thereby crucially assisting construction teams and saving time.
- Welding Superintendents will work within the Joint Design Office (JDO) Technical Branch* and interface with Inspection and Testing teams and the Project Delivery Managers of the 6 programmes on matters of welding and welded erection.
- **The JDO Technical Branch sits within the client part of the JDO and is part of the Technical Directorate, which works closely with other teams on site as well as off site in preparation for onsite activities.
Overview
- The Welding Superintendent is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting the Site Construction Programmes and Quality Delivery Managers in planning and delivering welding and allied activities on the Project.
- The role involves mainly liaising with and guiding Contract Partners to ensure that they understand and deliver the welding excellence required in the environment of a licensed nuclear construction site.
- The Welding Superintendent plays a key role in ensuring that the day-to-day welding quality is maintained at a high level and individual welders are supported and encouraged to produce high quality work and have the necessary tools and environment to perform at the highest level.
- The Welding Superintendent will be able to design and propose solutions to welding and welding related activities they will be able to understand and correct errors and foresee common error traps.
- The Welding Superintendent will report to the SME Team Leader on matters pertaining to welding, pipework erection and metallurgical controls such as heat treatment and mitigation of system stresses.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaising with all key stakeholders within programmes and functions and with Contract Partners and guiding them towards planning and resourcing all welding and associated activities appropriately.
- Ensuring Contract Partners engaging in welding related activities are aware of expectations in terms of prior qualification of welders and welding procedures
- Ensuring that welders have been adequately trained and are aware of all site and UK specific regulations and controls
- Ensuring that welding operations are being conducted in an environment that ensures quality and minimises the probability of defects
- Exploring opportunities for improvements to welding and associated processes
- Ensuring essential safety requirements are rigorously controlled
- Assisting Contract Partners to overcome difficulties and challenges
- Compiling statistics for welding and erection related activities to enable continuous improvement programmes to function smoothly
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Expert Welding Engineer, with experience of leading and developing welding activities on large projects
- Significant experience of welding and erection activities on large projects
- Proven ability to engage Senior Management and variety of stakeholders to work in the interest of attaining high quality welding with low defect rates
- Ability to contribute to the management of a high performing team that continuously outperforms expectations and objectives
- Have a sympathetic and observant work presence that gains respect and cooperation of work groups
- Be able to write informative, concise and meaningful reports
- Possess excellent organisation and communication skills
Desirable
- Education to degree level or a proven record of academic knowledge in mechanical and or materials related subject. This could include HND or NVQ level 4.
- Understanding of Quality Management Systems and experience of the application of ISO 9001 standard in a construction, engineering or industrial context.
- Experience as a welder or skilled mechanical craftsman
- Previous experience working in the nuclear or a similarly regulated industry would be highly valued
- Ability to identify and work with teams of skilled craftsmen.
