Are you energised by the challenge of building and shaping the biology on a drug discovery program? Do you have expertise in cell culture and functional biology assays to explore mechanisms underlying disease? If so, this Senior Scientist/Scientific Investigator position in the Respiratory and Immunology Research Unit (RIRU) at GSK could be an exciting opportunity for you. The RIRU is a cross-disciplinary research unit within R&D with a focus on developing innovative next generation therapeutics for patients with unmet need.

We are seeking a motivated, creative and highly skilled bench scientist to join our respiratory biology team within the RIRU. In this role you will be responsible for designing and delivering advanced biology assays to address key biological questions needed to progress respiratory drug discovery programs across disease indications including COPD and ILD, to their next milestone.

Please note that depending on experience, candidates may be considered for this role as either a Senior Scientist or Scientific Investigator.

In this role you will
  • Successfully develop and implement respiratory-relevant cell-based assays to evaluate the function of potential drug targets in disease relevant cells via pharmacological modulation and/or genetic manipulation
  • Troubleshoot technical problems relevant to experimental study execution
  • Write protocols, design and execute biology-focused experimental studies, applying advanced data analysis, interpreting data, compiling reports and communicating findings to project teams in order to progress projects and/or develop platforms
  • Build the biological rationale and generate scientific hypotheses to inform experimental design and approaches to support both new target work packages and later stage assets within the respiratory portfolio.
  • Work collaboratively in a matrix team and within a cross-functional environment to develop and carry out selected experiments to address key biological questions aligned to project goals within agreed timelines
  • Evaluate potential new targets via in silico -based approaches
  • Maintain a high level of documentation for all experimental work aligned with data integrity expectations

Why you?

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Respiratory Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and/or Immunology
  • Proficiency in designing, executing and interpreting experimental studies across a wide range of laboratory techniques gained from working in industrial or academic research environments
  • Experience of standard laboratory techniques, including cell culture (culture of disease relevant primary or iPSC human cells), optimisation and execution of cell-based assays (phenotypic and mechanistic), molecular biology, RNA isolation, RT-qPCR analysis, protein analysis, imaging and flow cytometric techniques
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present scientific findings to multidisciplinary internal and external stakeholders in a balanced, clear, and precise manner
  • Proven ability to balance priorities across multiple objectives, meeting timelines while maintaining attention to detail and high-performance standards.
  • Experience with data analysis software and knowledge of statistical analysis methodology and bioinformatics tools

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
  • Prior experience with establishing disease relevant in vitro models of respiratory disease or in respiratory biology such as human bronchial epithelial culture
  • Good understanding of drug discovery, ability to influence project direction by interpreting results outside area of expertise
  • Track record of scientific innovation as evidenced by effective support of drug discovery projects, peer-reviewed publications, conferences, reports or patents
