Job Description

At Anzen, we are revolutionising the clean energy transition for every home in the UK through our solid-state heat pump technology that aims to electrify heating. Our mission is to decarbonise the built environment at scale, fostering a resilient and equitable future. Through our pioneering solid-state HVAC system, offering whole-room heating, cooling, and ventilation, we are addressing the challenge of scaling low-carbon heating systems and adding value by improving indoor climate. Our flagship product, the Anzen Climate Wall, is an easy-to-retrofit, plug-and-play solution designed to improve EPC ratings while removing damp and mould across large housing portfolios.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic, motivated, and experienced Lead Mechanical Thermal Engineer to head the thermal engineering design, evaluation, and development. You will enjoy working in a fast-paced, explorative, and innovative environment. Ideally, you will possess a deep understanding of thermal engineering, with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in HVAC/automobile/heat transfer application sectors. This role requires a hands-on approach for design for manufacturing, make-or-buy decisions, and the rapid iterative prototyping necessary for engineering validation. If you enjoy leading research and development into manufacturing for real-time impact, then this role is perfect for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Thermal Engineering Design : Design and evaluation of heat exchangers and heat transfer mechanisms for optimisation of performance from first-principle hand calculations to system integration testing.

  • Design for Manufacturing: Oversee relevant design processes (CAD) to ensure manufacturability, including defining make-buy decisions and vendor selection.

  • Rapid Iterative Development: Lead rapid iterative design developments and engineering validations, ensuring a fast-paced, innovative approach to problem-solving. A multidisciplinary mindset is essential to develop solutions from mechanical, electronics, and wider system integration perspectives.

  • Risk Management: Identify, define, and manage work packages to de-risk areas of the product design early in the life cycle, ensuring robust and reliable outcomes.

  • Technical Reporting: Produce detailed technical reports, supervise detailed design and manufacture, and prepare and manage tender documentation.

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Be self-driven in solving complex engineering challenges while working within a growing, motivated team.

Technical Competencies:

  • Thermal Engineering Expertise: minimum 10 years experience in thermal engineering, heat transfer (using Comsol/ANSYS), and fluid mechanics. Prior experience working on data centre cooling would be an advantage.

  • Heat Exchanger Design and Validation: Proficient in designing heat exchangers from first principles and performing high-end validation with suppliers. Experience with new product development design for manufacturing(CAD and FEA).

  • First-Principle Problem Solving: Ability to solve complex thermal and fluid mechanics problems using fundamental principles of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.

  • HVAC Design : Additional experience in HVAC - building physics is highly recommended.

What We Offer:

  • No Day Feels the Same : There will be significant engineering challenges and breakthroughs to celebrate. You will be a part of a rapidly growing company, with significant potential for personal and professional growth.

  • Flexible Work Environment: We offer a flexible work environment to accommodate your lifestyle while ensuring productivity and creativity.

  • Impactful Work: Join us in our mission to make clean energy accessible and scalable, contributing to the fight against climate change and the eradication of fuel poverty. Every unit installed at this stage involves talking to customers and hearing firsthand the impact of your innovation.
