Role Summary


We are looked for a talented and enthusiastic Senior Policy Adviser to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for a policy generalist to contribute to our mission of influencing policy makers to ensure that government policies and priorities promote sustainable economic growth.


Through engaging with businesses and policymakers, you will be responsible for developing rigorous, evidence-based arguments, policy recommendations and best practice that respond to CBI member needs and help businesses innovate.


Key Responsibilities


Work with members to develop the CBI’s policy positions:

  • Demonstrate a strong grasp of the key policy challenges facing UK businesses and the political environment in which they are seeking to influence
  • Work with CBI members to continually develop policy positions, including managing competing business and commercial interests to produce messages with broad support
  • Work on discrete projects (e.g. policy briefs, reports, and consultation responses), using project management skills to track progress, manage risk and measure success
  • Work with colleagues in the CBI’s regional and devolved nations offices to extend the CBI’s policy work
  • Draft and present papers for senior-level boards and committees
  • Draft internal briefings for meetings, demonstrating awareness of political context


Maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders:

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with external contacts including relevant officials within governments, members of parliament and wider business and nongovernmental stakeholders with an interest in the policy area.
  • This will include representing the CBI at meetings to influence policy as well as preparing and delivering presentations.


Work effectively with businesses and colleagues across the CBI:

  • Engage effectively and collaboratively with senior representatives from the business community and colleagues across the CBI, including press, comms, public affairs, account managers and staff in CBI regional offices.
  • This work includes involving CBI members in policy formation, keeping them up to date with policy developments or changes which relate to their specific interests, and producing high quality analytical work which support CBI campaigns.
  • Take ownership of specific projects or events and build partnerships to deliver. They will work closely with the membership team to secure new members and help retain existing ones.
  • Keep the team and senior management team informed on key issues.
  • Seek innovative ways to maximise our member service and contribute to the organisation’s commercial goals.


Knowledge & Experience


  • Knowledge of the policymaking process in UK government
  • Experience of working in a policy or related role
  • Demonstrable interest in politics and public policy
  • Familiarity with the workings of business and commercial pressures
