Job Description

The Medical Assistant works directly with Southwest Center providers to serve our patients with integrity and through a person-centered approach. Our Medical Assistants are highly organized self-starters who have strong interpersonal skills and are excellent problem solvers providing non-judgmental care to our community members.


In this role, you will contribute to the Southwest Center mission of providing affirming and inclusive services to promote well-being and advance health equity for diverse communities and all those seeking compassionate care - especially people of color, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, and those affected by HIV.


Great schedule with three-day weekends!

Schedule: Tuesday- Friday (Tues 8a-5p, Wed 8a-7p, Thurs 8a-7p, and Fri 8a-5p)

What your day will look like at Southwest Center:

  • Work with various healthcare and support staff to assure smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operations; including, patient scheduling, inventory maintenance, prescription and lab processing, lab draws, assisting with procedures, and preparing/administering medications and injections via multiple routes for various treatment purposes.
  • Foster client focused care such as obtaining, communicating, and recording patient related information including vital signs, drug allergies, medications, medical histories, and reason for visit in Electronic Health Records (EHR, EClinicalWorks) in a timely manner.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures and manage specimens including labeling, requisition completion, transport to laboratories, and log maintenance.
  • Provide HIV and STI education services to individuals at high-risk for HIV infection. Facilitate and process blood (finger stick and venipuncture) specimens and prepare specimens for laboratory processing. Provide HIV test results to clients.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned including, but not limited to, processing referrals, medical records reconciliation, completing prior authorizations, triaging phone calls, and scanning/uploading documents into patient charts.
  • Medical Assistants cross-train in front office duties to excellent patient experiences.

Who we're looking for:

  • You've graduated from High School or completed your GED.
  • You've completed an accredited (CAAHEP or ABHES) medical assisting training program.
  • You have 1 year+ experience working as a medical assistant.
  • You've got excellent computer skills being both proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and competent in using electronic medical records and information systems.
  • You're professional, flexible, caring, and compassionate while exhibiting a congenial and sensitive attitude toward patients.
  • You've got strong interpersonal skills in dealing with a variety of people and proven ability to work independently while collaborating with others.
  • You have the ability to work in fast paced environment with changing deadlines and priorities while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • You have demonstrated cultural competency to professionally and respectfully serve the LGBTQIA2S+ communities required.

Environmental Factors, Physical Requirements, and Compliance

  • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential
  • Office environment, exposure to computer screens for lengthy periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand; use hands, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Currently have, or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 7 days of employment, a clear TB test.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 7 days of employment, a current flu vaccination.
  • Currently have, or are able to initiate within 7 days of employment, a COVID-19 primary vaccination series.
  • Currently have, or are able to initiate within 7 days of employment, a Hepatitis-B primary vaccination series.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 14 days of employment, a CPR certification.
