Responsibilities

What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems has an opportunity for an Engineer 2 to join our Roadway Practice in our Charleston, South Carolina office. This position will be a member of our roadway group and will lead and assist in various tasks including plan preparation, quantity calculation, geometric design, drainage design, MOT, specifications, cost estimates and other related tasks. Microstation, Geopak, MS Office and other design software will be used, and all work will be in collaboration with other engineers, technicians, planners, and surveyors. This position will also help mentor young engineers and will be given the opportunity to develop into a project manager. Candidates with a background in preliminary engineering or development of detailed plans and specification are preferred. Candidates must possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects.

* Prepare and/or preferably direct the preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules and designs for roadway design projects.
* Review project design for general compliance with engineering principles, company standards, client contract requirements, and related specifications.
* Show understanding of team management, develop project scope of work, estimate manpower needs, prepare CPM schedules and track project progress.
* Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and occasionally represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work.
* Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
* Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
* Research design options and document findings.
* Keeps supervisor informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
* Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program
* Experience with MicroStation/Geopak
* Experience with Microsoft Office Programs
* Familiarity with SCDOT plan preparation requirements for roadway projects.
* Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

What we'd prefer for you to bring to our firm:

* 4-8 years of design experience
* Professional Engineering License
* Experience with SC Municipalities
* Experience with Open Roads Design.

Work Environment:

* The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. * The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
