Job Details

Lead clinical ethics services at Christiana Care Health System aims to provide education, information, consultation, policy review and support to clinicians, physicians and other providers, as well as patients and families. The clinical ethicist will provide leadership and consultation to promote health care practices consistent with high ethical standards and a culture that encourages relationship-based care and a healthy work environment for clinical staff.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and ethics expertise managing the activities of Clinical Ethics services.
  • Provides ethical expertise and counsel to ChristianaCare Health System on moral frameworks, analysis, ethical decision making, organizational ethics and dispute resolution.
  • Collaborates on the development and implementation of mechanisms to address ethical issues that arise from an institutional perspective and that are designed to meet the requirements of regulatory and/or accrediting bodies.
  • Monitors and coordinates ethics programs and work, evaluates performance and quality.
  • Serves as a representative and as professional staff for the ChristianaCare Health System Ethics Committee and Co-Chairs the Committee
  • Leads the Ethics Consultation Service
    • Conducts clinical ethics consultations and mentor others to do the same.
    • Facilitates the Ethics Screeners on-call, serves as a resource to this team. including training and education and participates in the on-call rotation.
    • Assess and suggests ways to improve quality of consultation.
    • Conduct clinical ethics rounds in ChristianaCare's Intensive Care Units as needed/requested.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies with ethical components.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate ethics education programs for providers, staff, patients, families, and members of the community. Provide regular education for healthcare providers. Develop orientation and ongoing self-education programs for ethics committee members.
  • Develop community educational opportunities and outreach programs.
  • Partner with Care for the Caregiver Program to provide support to clinicians experiencing moral distress.
  • Reviews and reports consultation data to the Ethics Committee and to senior leaders on a regular basis.
  • Remains current with public ethical issues/changes/challenges to inform local decision making.
  • Participates in research to develop new knowledge and lead change.
  • Act as a community resource to assist in building clinical ethics programs.
  • Develop and maintain Ethics Committee collaboration website.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
Qualifications:
  • Medical Doctorate Degree: M.D. or D.O. required along with board certification in respective specialty.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in Delaware.
  • 5+ years of previous clinical experience involving direct patient care as a practicing Physician (MD/DO), required.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical ethics issues and concepts, ethics-related health law and advanced skill in building ethical consensus required.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary health care teams required.
  • Master's degree in clinical/biomedical ethics preferred.
  • 1+ Year previous experience conducting clinical ethics consults in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Leadership and teaching experience preferred.
