Job Title: Pastoral Assistant

Location: London, Camberwell

Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Salary: £26,982 - £28,412

Start Date: ASAP


MLK Education Search are pleased to be supporting this specialist school that supports young girls with various needs in the search for a Pastoral Assistant to start as soon as possible.


Key Responsibilities:

  • To operate systems to identify and support those pupils with pastoral and behavioural needs including the use of behaviour data and assessments to identify the needs of pupils and creation of appropriate Individual Behaviour Plans and risk assessments
  • Provide specific support to pupils dependent upon their individual needs ensuring their safety whilst supporting access to learning activities
  • To support and advise teachers and teaching assistants on intervention strategies to be used to manage the behaviour of pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
  • To liaise with outside agencies, write reports and development, implement and review Educational, Health and Care Plans and Additional Needs Plans
  • To work closely with staff, students parents/carers & stakeholders to improve levels of poor attendance/punctuality
  • To monitor pupils' learning and behaviour and feedback to relevant staff on the effectiveness of the behaviour strategies adopted
  • To provide innovative support strategies appropriate to individuals and their families and to regularly review the impact of these strategies
  • Help pupils refocus on class rules, personal targets and responsibilities in school and the wider community, following behaviour steps where self- control has been lost, use of reward charts, weekly records, targets, home school liaison, and time out cards
  • To support pupils in developing social skills both in and out of the classroom by providing pastoral support and promoting self-esteem and independence
  • To coach and mentor pupils in order to support them to improve the standard of their behaviour and their engagement with their education
  • To establish supportive relationships with the pupils concerned by giving positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the pupil(s) efforts and develop self reliance and self esteem
  • To establish supportive relationships with parents/carers by fostering links between home and school
  • Preparing reports where necessary and following up with parents to ensure school information is correct
  • Encourage pupils to resolve minor conflicts amicably and safely
  • To use the school systems as required to look up and record information e.g. MIS
  • To support the supervision of pupils in unstructured times e.g. supporting activities during break/lunch time, supervise pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required


Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English and Maths
  • Relevant training in Improving attendance attendance strategies (desirable) or a commitment to undergo training after probationary period
  • Strong experience of planning, managing and implementing Attendance strategies within a school setting
  • Experience identifying interventions to raise attendance of pupils
  • Experience of teaching small groups/individuals
  • Experience of working with students with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
  • Experience of planning and monitoring progress of individual/small groups
  • Experience working directly with pupils and parents
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues
  • Experience analysing data and producing reports and identifying key insights
