Job Description

Position: Project Manager – Data Centre Construction

Location: London

Employment Type: Contract

Reports to: Project Director

Overview:

We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Project Manager to oversee the end-to-end construction of a cutting-edge data centre facility. The ideal candidate will have strong project management expertise in large-scale construction, with specific experience in data centre projects. This individual will be responsible for delivering the project on time, within budget, and in compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Project Planning and Execution:
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, including scope, budget, timelines, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure all phases of the construction are planned and executed efficiently.
  • Establish clear project milestones, deliverables, and success criteria.
  • Ensure that all work is completed in line with the technical requirements and specifications of the data centre.
  1. Budget and Cost Management:
  • Prepare, manage, and monitor the project budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial accountability.
  • Track project expenditures and forecasts to ensure that the project remains within budget.
  • Approve and manage purchase orders, invoices, and contractor payments.
  • Identify potential cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
  1. Risk and Quality Management:
  • Identify potential project risks, including environmental, safety, and technical risks, and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all industry standards, including building codes, safety regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure the highest construction standards.
  1. Team Leadership and Coordination:
  • Lead cross-functional project teams, including architects, engineers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all internal and external stakeholders, ensuring smooth communication and decision-making processes.
  • Ensure that all team members are aligned with project goals and timelines.
  • Provide regular updates and progress reports to senior management and other key stakeholders.
  1. Schedule Management:
  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, ensuring that construction activities are completed on time.
  • Anticipate potential delays and develop contingency plans to keep the project on track.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contractors to ensure timely delivery of materials and services.
  1. Vendor and Contract Management:
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with third-party vendors and subcontractors.
  • Oversee vendor performance to ensure that services and materials meet the required quality and are delivered on time.
  • Resolve any contractual disputes in a timely manner.
  1. Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Management:
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate risks on-site.
  • Promote a strong safety culture among all contractors and workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. A master’s degree or PMP certification is a plus.
  • 7+ years of experience in construction project management, with at least 3 years in data centre construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of data centre infrastructure, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Proficient in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards such as TIA-942, Uptime Institute guidelines, and LEED certification.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, scheduling, and cost control.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience managing hyperscale data centre construction projects.
  • Knowledge of building information modeling (BIM) and other modern construction technologies.
  • Experience with energy-efficient and sustainable construction practices.
