Overview

Under the supervision of the Rapid Results Program Manager, Lead CEDIS, and County Public Health Investigator Supervisors, the Community Embedded Disease Investigation Specialist (CEDIS) will play a vital role in Men’s Health Foundation’s mission to arrest the spread of HIV/STDs in the community through their work in our express testing clinics in addition to assisting with daily clinic operations. In these fast-paced and dynamic environments, the CEDIS will work daily with MHF’s committed staff to provide our diverse patients access to HIV/STI testing, treatment, and health education. The CEDIS will provide compassionate, informed, and patient-centered counseling to clients including safer sex education, education about test results, and referrals to care. The CEDIS will also work with patients’ partners to educate them about their own risk, need to get tested, and treatment options.


The CEDIS must be able to maintain both strong professional boundaries and a compassionate, sex-positive approach to clients. At MHF, our goal is to educate clients so that they can make the best choices for their own lives.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate directly with Los Angeles County Department of HIV/STD Programs and clinical providers to serve clients infected with syphilis, HIV, and other STIs and refer their sex partners into screening and treatment
  • Educate patients about safer sex practices, including PrEP, PEP, condoms, and harm-reduction approaches.
  • Disclose HIV/STI test results and provide client-centered health education to patients who test positive for HIV and/or STIs about treatment options and supportive programming offered by MHF or other community organizations.
  • Interview patients who test positive for HIV/STIs to gather sex partner(s) information to identify the source of infections and to prevent disease transmission
  • Anonymously notify partners about possible exposure to syphilis, HIV and other priority STIs or communicable diseases
  • Provide HIV/STI prevention education for exposed partners and schedule appointments for testing/treatment
  • Schedule/follow up with STI treatment appointments
  • Provide guidance and assist with daily clinical operations to ensure efficient clinic flow· Work independently conducting field investigations (site visits to patient’s homes, neighborhoods, shelters, etc.) to locate patients, disclose test results, notify partners of possible exposure, and refer individuals for necessary medical evaluation and treatment
  • Collaborate with various clinics and hospitals to obtain and verify patient information
  • Consult with physicians and other clinicians to obtain medical information, provide appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations, and stimulate rapid and thorough reporting practices.
  • Implement enhanced surveillance activities, including administration of standardized questionnaires and medical record abstraction
  • Work with clinic staff to be sure infections are reported accurately and timely to DHSP.
  • Accurately enter client information into Allscripts, Men’s Health Foundation’s Electronic Health Record, and Los Angeles County’s data tracking system
  • Enhance practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of public health education or related field experience preferred
  • HIV counseling and testing experience or phlebotomy certification a plus

  • Working knowledge and/or experience working in public health or related field, including understanding of STIs, HIV preferred

  • Strong communication skills; works well in a team with a wide variety of people

  • Strong computer skills and ability to input data

  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, diverse environment

  • Understanding of HIPAA and the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times

  • Possess critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish fluency) skills, preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a Multicultural Environment



Compensation details: 24.04-32.65 Yearly Salary
