Position Summary

The Manufacturing Electrical Engineer will be responsible for developing, installing, testing, and maintaining the plant's Power and Motor Control Systems. This role also works closely with Automation Engineers to support the development, installation, and maintenance of Process Control Systems.

As a key member of the plant's Technical and Engineering Team, the Electrical Engineer will troubleshoot electrical system issues, identify root causes, and implement permanent solutions. This position serves as the primary liaison with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Electrical & Power Consultants, and Electrical Contractors. Additionally, the Electrical Engineer will handle the electrical design aspects of capital projects, often managing smaller projects independently and coordinating with outside engineering firms for larger ones.

The Electrical Engineer will also play a crucial role in the start-up of expansion projects, contributing to training, start-up planning, troubleshooting, and optimization efforts. Leading Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) for electrical-related issues and process failures will be a key responsibility.

Position Description

Responsibilities

•Utilize electrical engineering skills to support Technical / Engineering Team, Capital Group, and Maintenance in designing, scoping, providing equipment specifications, cost estimates, and implementation for capital and/or repair projects.

•Learn, understand and provide oversight of Electrical Designs in the plant to ensure compliance with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70 (National Fire Protection Association) and other applicable Industry Standards or Requirements.

•Act as the primary liaison to outside resources such as Electrical OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), Electrical/Power Consultants and Engineers, and Electrical Contractors.

•Participate or lead RCAs, PHAs (Process Hazard Analyses), and Risk Analyses, providing expertise on the electrical and controls aspects of the Analyses.

•Troubleshoot process issues, identify, and develop procedures to minimize or eliminate future occurrences.

•Perform electrical cost analyses to guide Team on process and equipment optimization/upgrades.

•Establish contacts with key equipment vendors and contractors to assist in optimizing performance and assist in troubleshooting issues. Work as a contractor coordinator when managing their work.

•Update Technical Information and Document files as needed and utilize the Management of Change (MOC) process.

Requirements:

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering theory and practical applications, primarily in the power and motor controls area.
  • Ability to evaluate, design, and maintain power distribution systems and upgrades for two manufacturing sites, from 480V up to a 138KV/34.5KV substation.
  • Proficiency in Power Protection and Controls (P&C) and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).
  • Experience with Steam Turbine Generators and Controls
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Experience in capital project design, scoping, and managing implementation with suppliers and contractors.
  • Proven ability and eagerness to learn and grow in Electrical Engineering and related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with plant networks (Server/Client architecture) and process control hardware.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications; experience with Yokogawa DCS, Exaquantum Data Historian, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Minitab, and NetSuite/Shepherd is a plus.
  • Experience in process control development and troubleshooting, including PLCs.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively with team members at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in report writing and presentations.
  • Thorough understanding of and adherence to industrial safe work practices, including the use of required PPE, Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures, fall protection, and compliance with OSHA standards.

Education and experience

  • BS in Electrical Engineering required
  • Relevant experience as an Electrical Engineer in an Industrial Manufacturing environment, such as Carbon, Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Power Generation, or Petroleum industries required, 4-7 years relevant experience required

Physical Demands

  • Frequent walking or standing for extended periods, particularly when inspecting or troubleshooting equipment in the plant.
  • May need to climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding to access elevated equipment or systems.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment or tools, typically up to 25-50 pounds.
  • Bending, Stooping, and Crouching may be required for accessing low-lying equipment, working in confined spaces, or conducting repairs.
  • Ability to use hand tools and precision instruments for wiring, repairs, or system installations.
  • Sharp hearing and vision are necessary for detecting warning signals, troubleshooting electrical systems, and reading schematics or technical drawings.
  • May involve reaching overhead or across equipment to perform maintenance or installations.
  • Regular use of PPE, such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and electrical insulating gear, when working in hazardous areas.
  • Ability to work in environments with loud noises, temperature extremes, dust, or other industrial conditions.
  • May require extended hours or being on-call to respond to emergencies or equipment failures.
